Gestational diabetes

Women with gestational diabetes are at increased risk for developing type 2 diabetes. New Yorkers with diabetes are now hospitalized at a rate nearly 80 % higher than the national rate. And the cost of these hospitalizations has skyrocketed in recent years, hitting $481 million in 2003, up from $242 million in 1990. The causes of diabetes are not yet fully understood. That is why the JDRF is dependent upon, and has benefited from, scientific research happening right here in Wisconsin.

Inequalities in the prevalence of diabetes are larger in women than in men. In men, the majority of countries show weak associations between socioeconomic position and diabetes, while in women these associations are clearer. People with diabetes are 15 times more at risk of lower limb amputation than people without the condition. Those people who have type 1 diabetes are dependent on insulin and life long injections are essential.

The risks are high!

Diabetes are five times more likely to have a heart attack, then there the problems with the nevres. Any nerve in the body can be affect, just think if the nerves that controls your bolw or digestion, the nevre that keeps you breathing and heart beating it is a big cause of death for diabeteics with that type of neuropathy. Also, up to 21% of people with Type 2 diabetes are already showing signs of retinopathy upon diagnosis, and most develop some degree of retinopathy over time. Although most children present with Type 1 diabetes other forms of diabetes are no longer uncommon and require specialist understanding and management. This module aims to equip multidisciplinary health care professionals with the knowledge and skills to provide the specialist care required for children with these types of diabetes.

Self care is important

Self-care is a complex issue and it is vital that people with diabetes are supported to develop the skills they need to manage their condition effectively. Care needs to meet the needs of the individual with diabetes, wherever it is delivered. In general, people with Type 1 diabetes are usually young, develop symptoms quite rapidly and need insulin treatment immediately. In contrast, Type 2 diabetes tends to occur in people who are over thirty and above average weight.
